DR ROBERT MELILLO &
THE MELILLO METHOD

WHO IS DR ROBERT MELILLO

Dr Robert Melillo is an internationally recognised clinician, researcher and educator in developmental functional neurology. His work focuses on brain imbalances and hemispheric integration—how the left and right sides of the brain communicate—and their impact on learning and behaviour.

At Brainshape, we draw on principles from the Melillo Method, always personalised to your child and designed to complement their existing care team.

  • The Melillo Method is a hemispheric-based approach designed to address core issues behind many neurodevelopmental and educational challenges in children and adults. In simple terms, it aims to restore better left–right balance in the brain and strengthen underdeveloped networks.

  • Think of the brain like a team: two hemispheres, many networks, each with a job. Sometimes one side or network is under-matured (a “functional disconnection”), so messages aren’t synced. That can show up as wobbly attention, clumsy coordination, slow reading, big feelings or sensory overwhelm. When we strengthen the weaker side and improve timing and communication, everything works more smoothly.

    • Left Brain under-maturity: language/reading delays, slower detail work, trouble with sequences.

    • Right brain under-maturity: reduced spatial/body awareness, missed social-emotional cues, big emotions, sensory overload.

  • The goal is straightforward: encourage balance by activating specific networks—most often on the under-performing side—using carefully selected stimulation paired with cognitive tasks. Sessions may blend:

    • multisensory input (light, sound, smell, touch)

    • movement and vestibular/balance activities (inner ear)

    • visual and auditory drills

    • fine/gross motor work

    • cognitive and academic activities

Together, these inputs are used to help networks grow, connect and sync, supporting better learning, behaviour, regulation and coordination.
