The Check No One Does: Are the Reflexes Still There?

Picture a straightforward birth - natural, unmedicated, a big healthy baby born without complication. The kind of birth story parents hope for.

Now picture that baby walking at nine months. Everyone's thrilled. Early walker. Advanced. Ahead of the curve.

Except sometimes, that's not the full picture - just not in a way anyone was looking for yet.

We Check If a Reflex Is There. We Rarely Check If It's Gone

Every baby gets checked for primitive reflexes early on. It's a standard part of a newborn exam, and for good reason. If a reflex isn't present at birth, that's a flag worth following up.

But here's a gap that gets less attention. Once a reflex is confirmed present, the checking often stops there. Fewer families are asked the other half of the question at six months, or twelve months, or two years: has this reflex actually gone now, the way it's meant to?

Primitive reflexes exist for a reason. They help a baby survive the first few months of life and lay down early wiring for what comes after. But they're meant to be scaffolding. As more mature, voluntary movement patterns take over, primitive reflexes are expected to fade into the background - a process called integration. Integration is just as important as the reflex being present in the first place.

When integration doesn't happen on the usual timeline, some children may experience effects on coordination, balance, attention, or emotional regulation - though the picture differs from child to child, and a retained reflex is one possible contributing factor among several, not an automatic explanation.

Why Walking Early Isn't Always the Full Story

Movement in babies typically builds from the ground up: rolling, then pushing up, then crawling, then pulling to stand, then walking. Each stage is thought to do real work - crawling in particular is often linked to cross-body coordination between the two sides of the brain, shoulder and core stability, and visual tracking practice. When a stage is skipped, or moved through quickly, some children don't circle back to fill in what they missed, though this varies and isn't the case for every child.

Every child's path looks a little different, and there's no single sign that tells the full story on its own. That's part of why checking back in over time - not just at the initial newborn screen - is worth considering.

The Window Matters

Reflexes still active well past the typical window are generally considered less likely to integrate fully on their own, though every child's timeline differs. A child can often learn to compensate around a retained reflex, and many do so well. But compensation is different from a strong foundation, and it can take more energy and effort than tasks that are meant to feel automatic.

In some children, unaddressed retained reflexes are one of several factors that may be associated with coordination difficulties, attention challenges, or emotional regulation difficulties appearing later on, though these presentations have multiple possible causes, and a retained reflex is only ever one piece of a bigger picture.

This is also part of why some families don't consider this until year one or two, or later. A baby who is calm, quiet, and not yet hitting milestones can look easy - good sleeper, low fuss, not much crying. It can be tempting to assume nothing is wrong. But it's worth knowing that low activity in an easy baby isn't always a sign that everything is on track.
